Symmetry

©2019 Robert Plaza

We are a constantly evolving culture. A culture eternally cycling, dying, and rebirthing. The cities we live in, the jobs we have shape our direction in where we go, but are we heading in the right direction? There is a constant noise of machines and growing infrastructure that we sometimes forget what silence sounds like. We are living in a jungle...A concrete jungle.

Be sure to watch out for the premiere on the 9th of January 2020!

Symmetry is a Project that has resonated with me for many years. Always driving around cities, going past different structures and industrial places. Also seeing sprouting and maturing trees in unexpected places. This played a key role in the visualization I had for this film. These trees are growing in the concrete, inside walls of buildings, in the water pipes, in front of windows and sometimes even inside homes.

    They'll always find a way.

Even though people are trying to control the environment, the trees that look like they are taking over the buildings break that control and create surprise. I love the determination of those trees. I just want to convey this feeling of determination and the strength coming out of it.

I have always looked at these locations differently from others. They resonate with me more. Why? That I still don't know. I always thought that making a film featuring these exotic places in my mind would be great, but I never knew how to put it into context or what the film should be about. But as time has gone on, I've managed to develop a story that not only is a recollection of my subconscious, but a topic that is quite important in our society today. Mankind started out with nature, trees, and wildlife. But we've managed to recreate jungles in our cities....concrete jungles.

The development of our cities and the human population on earth which is expanding rapidly goes hand in hand with the degradation of the environment. And, of course, deforestation, which kills thousands of animals each year and forces the extinction of many species.

Mankind is like a virus. We can’t stop ourselves. Our time on earth is short in comparison to time perspectives in the universe in general. Eventually, the earth just won’t be able to sustain us anymore.
And when you think about it, one of the main driving forces is politics of course. Politicians get such a large pension for the rest of their life for essentially driving the economy and environment straight into the ground.

None of these factors help of course and that’s one of the reasons I made this film. I think it has such an important message and really opens the eyes to anyone who watches this film. It's not blaming anyone or pointing any fingers. Its simply trying to open the eyes of so many people who are blind to what's actually happening.

It's crazy. A few people have come up to me so far and said that this is such a big topic to cover for someone my age. But I guess most people my age couldn't care less about the environment or are simply just uninterested or uneducated. Which is sad of course. But I think that's the main problem. People are so caught up with their daily lives that they don't even realize that we are approaching a mass extinction event. Wether it takes only a handful of years or another hundred years. It will be hard to show people what's actually happening until it really is too late.

I think for a brief period of time we have created an illusion for ourselves that we somehow control nature. We can’t and never will.

    Nature always wins.
